Balloon Weekend in Kenton on Sea - Sites to See and Places to Visit

Category News

From Friday, 29 September to Tuesday, 3 October 2023, Kenton on Sea gears up for the much-anticipated Balloon Weekend and the half-term break that follows after that, celebrating the local school's top achievers. Residents and visitors are certainly in for a treat. This event marks a significant milestone for the 2023 matriculants and their parents as they bid farewell to school life and embark on their next adventure.

While in this picturesque coastal town for Balloon Weekend, half-term or both, take the opportunity to explore and enjoy some of the best activities Kenton on Sea, known as the "Barefoot Capital", has to offer.

Beach and Activities

Kenton-on-Sea and Port Alfred provide some of the most spectacular beaches in our country along the coastline of the Eastern Cape. Having the Kariega Main Beach in Kenton as well as the Kelly's Beach in Port Alfred with their Blue Flag status, just shows how much the people in our area invest in caring, looking after and taking pride in our beaches for all to enjoy.

We also have the Cannon Rocks beaches that have world-class ratings for kitesurfing. A few kilometres up the Boknesstrand Beach will lead you to the top of the headland that extends the furthest. Bartholomew Diaz, the Portuguese navigator and discoverer of the Cape, erected a cross (also known as a Padrão) on 12th March 1488. A cross replica has been erected on the same bleak, exposed spot. It is a must-see!

There are numerous beaches to visit in the area, and it is recommended to see some of them and enjoy the activities you wish to enjoy. Attractions include a variety of water sports, world-class kitesurfing, water skiing, and snorkelling, among others or just enjoy soaking up the sun where we have the most sunshine hours in the country. This is where the sun has been rumoured to spend its winter months.

Recreation and Sport

  • Golf at the Royal Port Alfred Golf Club
  • Bowls and Tennis at the Kenton Recreational Centre
  • Squash (Bookings at 0466481310)

Boating, Fishing & Charters

Boating in the area is extremely popular, with many charter river cruises. Don't miss out on our wide variety of sea and bird life, and keep an eye open for the whales that make their home in the ocean's depths just off the Kenton-on-Sea shores. In light of this, see it all up close on the charters.

River Cruises are also sought-after activities on the Kariega River and Boesmans River.

Beach meets Bush in nearby Game Reserves

Numerous hiking and canoe trails and the prestigious game reserves available in the area emphasise the great variety of wildlife we are blessed with. This is where the Beach meets the Bush.

We have a great variety of fauna and flora, not to mention the Big Five just a few kilometres away from Kenton-on-Sea in the game reserves, where they live happily in their natural habitat. Enjoy seeing the Big Five and our "Bush" life up close and personal.

Our most adored game reserves include Kariega Game Reserve and Sibuya Game Reserve.

Close proximity to Addo Elephant Park for day visits for the whole family.

Arts & Culture

With so much happening in our small coastal area and villages, we further expand to a rich arts and cultural side.

Various art studious, galleries, tours and workshops are available throughout Bathurst, Port Alfred, Kenton and Boesmansriviermond.

To name a few must-see art studios and galleries;

  • Tess Lovemore Art
  • Rose Deary,
  • Richard Pullens's Studio
  • Gallery and Heartfelt Creations
  • Brian Hammond
