Art has the ability to do more than enrich our spaces. At its most powerful, it tells stories, preserves moments and creates meaningful connections between people, places and causes.
This October, Hamilton’s Property Portfolio, in collaboration with Candice Berman Gallery, presents the Hamilton’s Charity Art Auction - a curated celebration of contemporary South African art, bringing together collectors, art enthusiasts and community members in support of Sandton SPCA.
This carefully curated collection brings together works from some of South Africa’s most distinctive artistic voices, alongside important contemporary artists whose practices reflect the diversity, complexity and energy of the country’s evolving art landscape.
Spanning painting, mixed media, collage, printmaking and sculpture, the collection moves between abstraction, figuration, expressionism and socially engaged practice. Each artwork offers more than visual appeal; it provides a glimpse into the artist’s perspective on identity, humanity, history and the world around us.
Through this collaboration, Hamilton’s and Candice Berman Gallery invite guests to experience the transformative power of collecting - where acquiring an exceptional artwork becomes an opportunity to support a cause that makes a tangible difference.
View the Collection
The Hamilton’s Charity Art Auction will be available to view online from 7 October, giving you the opportunity to explore the works at your leisure and, should a particular piece capture your attention, to place a bid.
Rather than revealing the entire collection at once, new artworks will be introduced periodically throughout the Auction, creating something new to discover each time you return. This is in order to allow each work its moment while giving you the pleasure of experiencing the collection as it unfolds.
We invite you to revisit the Auction between 7 and 21 October 2026 to discover the latest additions and perhaps find the piece that speaks to you.

Bidding closes on 21 October 2026 at 8pm. Successful bidders will receive a notification confirming their winning bid. The artwork will then appear in their basket, where payment can be completed securely through the checkout process. Once payment has been finalised, the artwork will be available for collection from Candice Berman Gallery or delivery can be arranged at the buyer’s cost.
Art With Meaning
The auction features a remarkable selection of artists, including Benon Lutaaya, Blessing Ngobeni, Norman Catherine, Solomon Omogboye, Andrew Mogridge, John Vusi Mfupi, Restone Maambo, Sarah Grace and Maja Maljević, each bringing their own distinctive visual language and creative perspective.
Together, their works reflect the richness of contemporary South African art - from deeply personal narratives to broader reflections on society, culture, memory and belonging.
Benon Lutaaya
The late Benon Lutaaya was a Ugandan-born, Johannesburg-based artist whose emotionally powerful mixed-media works explored themes of identity, migration, vulnerability and the search for belonging.
Working with collage, painting and layered materials, Lutaaya created deeply expressive portraits from fragments of paper, found imagery and painted surfaces. His works often reflected the complexity of human experience - exploring displacement, resilience and the stories held within individual lives.
Lutaaya’s artistic journey gained significant recognition, including receiving the Arts & Culture Trust Young Impact Award in 2015. His work was celebrated for its emotional depth and ability to connect personal narratives with broader questions around identity, community and belonging.
Although his life was tragically cut short in 2019, Lutaaya’s artistic legacy continues through the enduring impact of his work. His portraits remain a powerful reminder of the humanity, histories and emotions that exist beyond what is immediately visible.
.
Blessing Ngobeni
One of South Africa’s most prominent contemporary artists, Blessing Ngobeni is known for his powerful mixed-media paintings that combine expressive figures, collage and symbolic imagery.
Born in Tzaneen, Limpopo, in 1985, Ngobeni’s work often examines power, inequality, social structures and the complexities of contemporary life. His distinctive visual language draws from influences including Surrealism, Dadaism and Neo-Expressionism, creating artworks that are both visually dynamic and deeply reflective.
Ngobeni received the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Visual Arts in 2020 and has exhibited locally and internationally. His practice demonstrates how art can become a platform for questioning, conversation and change.
Norman Catherine
A celebrated figure in South African contemporary art, Norman Catherine has built an instantly recognisable visual world through painting, sculpture, printmaking and mixed media.
Known for his surreal, often humorous yet thought-provoking characters, Catherine’s work combines satire, imagination and social commentary. His distinctive creatures and bold compositions have become part of the visual language of South African art, exploring themes of politics, society, human behaviour and the absurdities of modern life.
With a career spanning decades, Catherine remains one of the country’s most influential and recognisable artists.
Solomon Omogboye
Originally from Nigeria and now based in South Africa, Solomon Omogboye creates expressive figurative works that explore emotion, humanity and everyday experiences.
Working across mediums including charcoal, pastel, acrylic and oil, Omogboye’s paintings often focus on the complexity of human relationships and the emotional narratives carried within portraiture. His artistic works invite viewers into intimate moments, capturing both personal stories and universal emotions.
Restone Maambo
Zambian-born artist Restone Maambo is recognised for his contemporary figurative paintings exploring identity, heritage, memory and human connection.
Through expressive figures and carefully considered compositions, Maambo reflects on themes of culture, ancestry and personal experience. His work has been presented through exhibitions where his practice has continued to gain recognition within the contemporary African art scene.
A Collaboration Supporting Sandton SPCA
At the heart of Hamilton’s Charity Art Auction is a commitment to community - using the power of art to support an organisation dedicated to compassion, care and protection.
Sandton SPCA has been serving the local community for decades, providing essential care, protection and advocacy for animals in need. Through rescue, rehabilitation, veterinary support and responsible rehoming initiatives, the organisation plays an important role in improving the lives of vulnerable animals while promoting responsible pet ownership.
Like many animal welfare organisations, Sandton SPCA relies heavily on community support and fundraising initiatives to continue its work. Every contribution helps provide food, medical treatment, shelter and ongoing care for animals requiring assistance.
The collaboration between Hamilton’s Property Portfolio and Candice Berman Gallery brings together two shared values: appreciation for beauty and a commitment to making a meaningful difference. By combining exceptional contemporary South African art with a charitable purpose, the Auction creates an opportunity to support a cause that extends far beyond the gallery walls.
A Celebration Beyond the Canvas
While each artist brings a unique voice to the Auction, the collection is united by a shared belief in the ability of art to create connection.
For collectors, it represents an opportunity to acquire meaningful works from important contemporary artists. For guests, it offers a chance to experience the creativity and diversity of South African art. And for the SPCA, it provides valuable support towards protecting and caring for animals in need.
This Charity Art Auction is a reminder that beauty and generosity can exist together - that a painting, sculpture or carefully chosen piece can become more than an object. It can become part of a larger story of compassion, community and positive impact.
