Area Profile: Bryanston

Category News

This sprawling suburb is known for its beautiful tree-lined streets, excellent schools and proximity to the economic hub of Sandton. We're taking a closer look at Bryanston and some of the highlights of living in the area.

With its diverse array of residents and tight knit communities, ideal location and exceptional properties, Bryanston is one of the most sought-after suburbs in Johannesburg - and for good reason. Take a look at what sets this suburb apart and enjoy some personalised tips and hints from our newest intern agent and Bryanston area specialist, Jen Taylor.

Location

One of the most appealing aspects of living in Bryanston is its fantastically central location. It is just far enough from the main business areas to provide residents a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life, while still being a short commute from both Sandton and Johannesburg CBDs. One of the larger suburbs in Johannesburg, Bryanston is nestled within the N1 ring road and is split into two areas, namely Bryanston East and Bryanston West. The suburb is positioned on a ridge which affords it spectacular views of its surroundings, with Bryanston East bordering on the economic hub of Sandton and boasting cosmopolitan views of the cityscape, while Bryanston West borders Randburg and offers sprawling views of the West Rand and the distant Magaliesberg mountains.

Jen says: It's interesting to me to see how differently the 2 "sides" of Bryanston are perceived, and how territorial people often are about living in the East or the West. What I've found is they both have their merits, and where people work, or where their children attend school, often dictates which "side" they choose.

The Bryanston Golf course

One of Bryanston's main attractions is the exclusive Bryanston Golf Course which is located in the centre of the suburb. With its verdant lawns and lush trees, the golf course is one of the jewels of the area and offers a tranquil escape from the city for residents who live nearby. The golf course is also bordered by the wonderful Cumberland Bird Sanctuary, where residents can enjoy the natural greenery and beautiful local birdlife.

Jen says: Some of our clients' properties are privileged to border the Golf Course, with gorgeous views of its extensive green space. These are few and far between and are snapped up fairly rapidly when listed.

Amazing properties

As it is one of the older suburbs in Johannesburg, Bryanston has a wonderful mix of properties available to choose from - ranging from large spacious homes with big gardens, to modern apartments and high-end housing developments. This means that Bryanston has properties to suit every type of buyer and you will easily find the perfect home to suit your needs, whether you're a young professional looking for a one-bedroom apartment close to work, a family looking for a spacious home to raise your children or an older couple looking for a secure development to retire in.

Jen says: Bryanston is home to some of the most breathtaking properties and views, with a wide variety of properties on offer. While people may think the only properties available in Bryanston are the huge mansions on acre stands, there are many clusters in security estates on stands of 1000sqm or less, and an increasing number of gorgeous, contemporary new developments, with the added benefits of choosing your own finishes, and of not attracting transfer duty.

Schools

Further cementing its spot as the perfect suburb to raise a family in, Bryanston is home to some of South Africa's top schools, both government and private and ranging from pre-primary to high school; while it is also just a stone's throw away from other top schools located in surrounding areas. Some of the schools that call Bryanston and its surrounding areas home, include:

  •        Brescia house

  •        St Stithians

  •        Bryanston High School

  •        King's College

  •        Bryandale Primary

  •        Bryneven Primary

  •        Crawford College Sandton

  •        Sandhurst Pre-primary and Preparatory

  •        Michaelmount Waldorf School

  •        British International Preparatory

Jen says: Bryanstonians are spoiled for choice when it comes to schools. There's one to suit every family, and every budget.

Lifestyle

Bryanston is a hub of activity that offers all its residents, no matter their age, a truly enviable lifestyle with plenty to do and see on a daily basis. Whether your ideal outing is to enjoy a delicious meal at a trendy restaurant, visit an art gallery, grab a cup of coffee with friends, have a picnic with your children at a park or play a round of golf, Bryanston has something for everyone.

Residents can do their shopping at any one of the area's high-end shopping centres (both big and small), including Nicolway, Bryanston Shopping Centre, Hobart Grove and Bryan Park; get their coffee fix at one of the quaint coffee shops or bistros in the area and whet their appetites at Bryanston's selection of trendy restaurants.

For those who enjoy staying active, Bryanston is also home to a large number of gyms, yoga and Pilates studios, sports clubs and, of course, the golf course. When it comes to self-care, residents have a selection of luxury spas, exclusive salons and hairdressers to choose from in the area.

Jen says: In the year that I've worked in Bryanston, I've made a number of happy discoveries. One of my favourites is the Hobart Spar, with its incredible array of fresh, home-cooked food, and its phenomenal bakery. Whether I'm stocking up on essentials, grabbing a quick bite for lunch, needing a delicious cake, or catering for a dinner party, I can always find everything I need there, with friendly staff always willing to help.

As for coffee shops, I absolutely love The Daily Grind at Bryanston Shopping Centre, with its outdoor seating area, extensive menu, delicious coffee and juices, and friendly waiters. It's such a great place to stop for a quick refresher after a shopping trip. Their toasted chicken mayonnaise on ciabatta is legendary. I always think it's too much, and am surprised when I finish it. Every time.

Medical facilities

Bryanston boasts a large number of top-notch medical facilities ranging from the Sandton MediClinic, to a selection of smaller health centres. Bryanston is also home to an array of medical professionals from doctors, to dentists, physiotherapists, dermatologists and mental health professionals, amongst others.

The last word

Bryanston offers a truly unique living experience for its residents thanks to its diversity and its proclivity for attracting everyone from families looking to raise their children in suburbia to working professionals both young and old. This means that residents of the area enjoy a well-rounded lifestyle filled with opportunity - what more could you need?
