5 reasons to stay in South Africa

Category News

It has been a topic that is on the tips of tongues of many South Africans this year - should I stay, or should I go? Oftentimes it seems as though there are infinite reasons why leaving the country in search of greener pastures is a good idea, be it ever-increasing crime rates, the results of the recent elections, endemic government corruption or difficulties finding jobs. But living in South Africa is not all doom and gloom, we are lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful countries in the world, with some of the most amazing people.

So, if you're looking for a beacon of hope in the dark, here are a few of the reasons why you should stay in this amazing country that we call home.

The people
South Africans are some of the most vibrant and friendly people in the world, and those of us who live here take that for granted. Oftentimes people who move overseas find themselves surrounded by surprisingly unfriendly or disinterested people, which can be a shock to the system, especially to those of us who are used to the friendly South African demeanor. Our country is home to many diverse cultures and religions which make the people who make up our Rainbow Nation truly one of a kind. If you still aren't convinced, go and read the heartwarming stories about our country and its amazing people that have been posted on the #I'mStaying facebook group.

The weather
South Africa is not called 'sunny South Africa' for nothing. Our country is known for its wonderfully temperate climate, with beautiful hot summer's days and very mild winters; making it one of the best places in the world to live (unless, of course, you prefer the snow) and a favourite travel destination for many tourists.

Nature
South Africa is overflowing with natural wonders and exquisite scenery to enjoy - including our unparalleled Kruger National Park, majestic Drakensberg mountain range, scenic wine route and the pristine white sand beaches that litter our coastlines. We are lucky to have such abundant natural wonders on our doorstep and you never have to travel far to find yourself in beautiful natural surroundings. South Africa is also home to some of the most beautiful cities in the world which draw thousands of tourists to our shores annually from all around the world.

Our constitution
South Africa has one of, if not the most progressive constitutions in the world. Our constitution is a great feat of democracy and which protects gay rights, freedom of religious belief and the rights of minorities and women - something which is surprisingly uncommon in much of the rest of world. Living in a country which is defined by its progressive constitution is something which we as South Africans often take for granted and moving to a country with a less progressive constitution would definitely take some getting used to.

Location
While other countries seemed to be plagued by disasters, both natural and man-made, South Africa exists in a relatively peaceful space thanks to our excellent geographical and geopolitical location. Our country is situated far from any fault lines, volcanoes and out the path of major tropical cyclones; which keeps us comfortably insulated from most major natural disasters. Our location at the southernmost tip of Africa also places us quite far away from war torn countries and extreme political unrest, putting us at low risk compared to other countries which are located in more volatile areas.

These reasons are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to why you should want to stay in this beautiful country that we call home, despite the hardships we currently face. We are so lucky to live in a truly unique country, with its vibrant people and wonderfully diverse cultures.
