Category News

No home is complete without the addition of some spectacular pieces of art, so we're looking at five local artists whose work is taking the South African contemporary art scene by storm.

The presence of art can truly make or break a home's décor, which is why it forms such an integral part of interior design. Finding art that not only complements your home, while adding an element of vibrancy, a splash of colour and a whole lot of character but that will also be a good investment, can be tough. To help you navigate the wonderfully diverse world of South African contemporary art, we're putting a spotlight on talented local contemporary artists, both established and up and coming, whose work should definitely be on your radar.

William Kentridge

Arguably one of the most lauded contemporary artists in the country and an icon who needs no introduction, William Kentridge is known for his visceral artworks which have gained him massive acclaim both locally and internationally and are an absolute must-have for any serious art collector. His striking monochromatic pieces are ripe with political sentiment and have famously been exhibited across the globe. Kentridge's unique and stirring artworks are much sought after and are guaranteed to be a feature and major talking point in your home.

Athi-Patra Ruga

With his vibrant artworks featured in notable galleries around the world, Umtata-born Athi-Patra Ruga is part of a new generation of extraordinarily talented South African contemporary artists to watch out for. Combining playful imagery and vibrant colours, his pieces challenge the limits of reality in order to create and explore the idea of an artistic utopia. His mesmerising artworks would undoubtedly be a show-stopping addition to any part of your home and would be the jewel of your art collection.

Nandipha Mntambo

Originally from eSwatini and famous for her gorgeous sculptures, as well as her photographs and mixed-media pieces, Nandipha Mntambo is rapidly making a name for herself within South Africa's burgeoning contemporary art scene. Her cascading human figure-shaped cowhide sculptures have gained her international acclaim and have been exhibited at galleries, as well as the Zeitz Mocaa Museum of Contemporary Art. Her art explores the relationship between humanity and the natural world in a uniquely South African way, firmly placing her within the ranks of game-changing local artists to look out for.

Jody Paulsen

A rising star within the local contemporary art scene, Jody Paulsen's vibrantly colourful art has been exhibited both internationally and locally, and he currently occupies a coveted spot at the Zeitz Mocaa Museum of Contemporary Art. Known for his boldly colourful and elaborate tapestries that tell the story of the highs and lows of our modern world, Paulsen's artworks are eye-catching to say the least and the perfect addition to a contemporary art collection.

Blessing Ngobeni

Hailing from Tzaneen in the Eastern Cape, Blessing Ngobeni is an extraordinarily talented local artist who uses found objects, articles and paint to create vivid and strikingly abstract artworks. Using his art as a platform for critiquing our country's politics and the corruption that is rife within, Ngobeni has exhibited his art in both local and international galleries to much acclaim. Evocative and unforgettable, Ngobeni's artworks would easily stand out in any art collection.

Although we have many extraordinarily talented established artists in South Africa, this country continues to be a breeding ground for artistic talent as more and more young artists are making names for themselves in both local and international art scenes. This means that there has never been a better time to invest in art, especially by local artists and bring some uniquely South African character into your home.
