Plan a trip to Japan for the 2020 Olympics!

Located in the heart of Japan, an exquisite country that is renowned for its vibrant culture and history; the sprawling metropolis of Tokyo is truly a dream destination. And, with the 2020 Tokyo Olympics coming up later this year, why not take this opportunity to travel to Japan, immerse yourself in the country and its culture - with the added benefit of enjoying the sporting spectacle that is the Olympic Games.

Spend two weeks on holiday in Japan, watching athletes representing countries from across the globe, competing in 33 different sports, all trying to win gold at the Olympics. Here's how you can plan your trip to Tokyo, Japan to watch the 2020 Olympics:

Save the date
The Olympics will take place from July 24, 2020, to August 9, 2020; with matches held in various stadiums and sporting venues throughout the city of Tokyo.

Book your flights now
Tokyo is serviced by two international airports: Haneda International Airport, which is Japan's biggest airport, located closer to central Tokyo; or Narita International Airport, which is Japan's second-biggest airport and is located about 60kms away.

Visa applications
South African passport holders will need to apply for a visa at the Japanese embassy in Pretoria. To apply for a Visa, you will need to hand in your application in person at the embassy itself or, if you're in Cape Town, at the Consular Office of Japan. The process of getting the visa can take between 1-2 months so it is important that you apply well in advance

Choosing where to stay
Tokyo has a large number of accommodation options to choose from, from the Trip Advisor Traveller's Choice winner Imperial Hotel Tokyo to high-end Airbnb's, that you can choose from. These options do, however, run the risk of booking out quickly due to increased demand during the Olympics, so be sure to book as soon as possible.

Getting tickets for the games
The events will be held at over 40 different locations in and around Tokyo, including the Olympic Stadium, the Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium and the Yoyogi National Stadium. According to the SASCOC website, in order to get tickets for the different events, South African citizens will have to purchase tickets directly from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games website. Tickets for international buyers will go on sale from the 14th of June 2019 at midnight, Tokyo time (7 hours ahead of South Africa).

While you're in Tokyo be sure to check out some of the city's world-renowned architecture, exquisite gardens and innumerable tourist attractions.
