It's that time of the year when we look forward to the new year and the sophisticated trends it will bring. Here we share some ideas and trends for 2021 we're excited about.
Going natural
Growing concern for global environmental issues is having more and more influence on the interior design industry to devise ingenious ways of incorporating sustainable materials into contemporary design.
Products are classed as sustainable according to three main criteria - the actual material, the manufacturing process they undergo and if they are installed without the use of harsh chemicals or adhesives.
The interior design focus has shifted to natural, sustainable or recycled materials to evoke a sense of warmth and serenity; from cork, constructed of tree bark, for flooring, wall panelling and ceilings; to bamboo, a strong, durable woody-type grass, for fabrics, textiles, furniture and carpeting; to wool, linen and hemp (from cannabis plants grown specifically for industrial use) ideal for attractive upholsteries, bedding and window treatments - provided only sustainable inks have been used for dyeing these; to recycled leather byproducts and wood veneers for wall panels; and to seagrass, and sisal, for carpets and rugs.
Wood, in particular light wood, is the current material of choice for furniture and for flooring, wall and ceiling cladding and for wood-look finishes and techniques.
With bringing nature into our homes being in vogue, natural materials will appear everywhere you look!
Flexible zones
A modern trend is the creation of multi-function areas which harmoniously blend several activities in one space without compromising on the style of each with an easy, seamless flow between the zones. A must for the modern family is the integration of the dining room, kitchen and living room into a large open-plan living space where the family all socialise whilst cooking preparations are underway. It's also ideal for a young family where the children can be happily at play as well as be under the supervision of the adults who are busily preparing a meal. It's a smooth blend of a softer, curvy, comfy living area with the sleek, straight, structured lines of kitchen surfaces.
Covid has forced further adoption of this integrated space concept as we found clever ways of combining other activities into a flexible-use room - like a work-from-home and living combination in an neat office nook in the bedroom or in a quiet corner of the lounge or a nifty office space surreptitiously hidden in a hallway cupboard.
With dexterous planning and tailoring, flexible-use zones for other needs like leisure or creativity for your family can be created as the needs arise.
Walls to make a statement
Feature walls will add drama and character to a room whether painted in a classy contrasting shade, clad artfully in natural materials like cork or wood for a tactile finish or understated with exposed brickwork. A statement piece of arresting artwork or an impressive mirror will accentuate the focus on this feature wall.

Indoor gardens
Biophilic design is another growing trend with indoor plants, beneficial to our interiors and health, improving the quality of our indoor air when they release oxygen into the space. Vertical walls, a hot trend for 2021, create a beautiful, lush, living art feature in homes and with their abundance of tightly clustered fresh plantings they improve the acoustics of a room. Secret or private indoor gardens are becoming popular as an interior, eye-catching and inspiring, stylish natural display.

The sustainability trend will be very visible in 2021 home textiles in variations of woven and knitted natural fabrics, wool, cotton and linen. For rich colours and glamour, sumptuous velvet, though not 100% eco-friendly, will adorn our home spaces in luxury.
